Structures
The public register covers floor groups 00 through 83. Volumes above that range exist and are not publicly represented.

Records are resolved by designation. No further action is required.
A volume is registered when it has been measured and entered. The two are separate acts, and the interval between them is not fixed — the register therefore holds fewer volumes than the survey has found, and the difference is published rather than reconciled.
Administrative categories
- Active In use, measured, and current Ordinary. Most volumes are not in this category.
- Retained Held on the record The entry stands. What it describes may not be present in the ordinary sense.
- Measurement pending Indexed, not yet measured Entered on the strength of the excavation record.
- Revision pending A revision is filed and not concluded The current representation remains the previous one.
- Unresolved Two readings disagree Both are retained. No correction is scheduled.
- Withdrawn Public representation withdrawn The volume remains registered and remains addressable.
Entries without volume
An entry may be correctly indexed, correctly addressable, and measure zero. The plan is not in error where this occurs: the entry is genuinely there and genuinely empty, and it is drawn at the smallest extent the instrument will admit so that its presence is not mistaken for its absence.
The register is entered by floor group through Records.
